{"id":2180,"date":"2016-04-18T11:09:26","date_gmt":"2016-04-18T18:09:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.k12opened.com\/blog\/?p=2180"},"modified":"2016-04-18T11:09:26","modified_gmt":"2016-04-18T18:09:26","slug":"thinking-about-connected-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.k12opened.com\/blog\/archives\/2180","title":{"rendered":"Thinking about connected learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a chat on Twitter, this weekend, Kevin said that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fasimpaur.com\/index.php\/2015\/11\/03\/postcard-project-an-overview\/\">our little postcard project <\/a>was one of the &#8220;most connected\/enjoyable&#8221; CLMOOC activities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dogtrax\/status\/721731955621044225\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2181\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2181\" src=\"https:\/\/www.k12opened.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/chat.jpg\" alt=\"chat\" width=\"233\" height=\"659\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.k12opened.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/chat.jpg 233w, https:\/\/www.k12opened.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/chat-106x300.jpg 106w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That got me thinking back to the <a href=\"http:\/\/connectedlearning.tv\/what-is-connected-learning\">meaning of connected learning<\/a> and whether this project qualifies.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my mapping of the CL principles and values to this project.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Interest-powered &#8212; Yes, we are all doing this because it is of interest to us.<\/li>\n<li>Peer-supported &#8212; Yes, this project only happens because we all support it and each other.<\/li>\n<li>Academically oriented &#8212; ??? Perhaps if you consider general communication (writing, media literacy, etc.) to be an academic orientation, but otherwise, not so much. (I have to say though that personally, I have often turned away from this principle as a part of CL.)<\/li>\n<li>Shared purpose &#8212; Yes, our purposes are shared: to connect, to make cool postcards, to get happy mail.<\/li>\n<li>Production-centered &#8212; Yes, we are creating these cards ourselves.<\/li>\n<li>Openly networked &#8212; ??? CLMOOC as a whole sought to be openly networked and to bring together different institutions, groups, and individuals. Participation in this postcard project too was extended to everyone, but in reality, it was mostly a small group of us who already knew each other who participated. (See more on this below.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Equity &#8212; ??? Again, while we aim for equitable participation, it&#8217;s not evident we&#8217;ve achieved it. (What could we do achieve broader participation? More offline activities? More promotion in different spaces? What about a make-a-postcard station at a f2f maker event or in a library? Other ideas?)<\/li>\n<li>Social connection &#8212; Yes, we are connecting with each other through the good old fashioned post.<\/li>\n<li>Full participation &#8212; ??? See above<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This may seem like an overly academic analysis of this project. (I mean, the amount of happiness and joy it has inspired has been enough!)
