{"id":1960,"date":"2015-07-09T14:50:09","date_gmt":"2015-07-09T21:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.k12opened.com\/blog\/?p=1960"},"modified":"2015-07-09T14:50:09","modified_gmt":"2015-07-09T21:50:09","slug":"open-business-models-part-2-a-price","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.k12opened.com\/blog\/archives\/1960","title":{"rendered":"Open business models, part 2: a price"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 359px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8744\/17283526416_a5327bfdd5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"359\" height=\"246\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Pictures of money; CC BY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My main premise for an assortment of forthcoming business models is to position OER core curriculum product package as having a <strong>greatly reduced cost<\/strong> as opposed to being \u201cfree\u201d and to use the proceeds to fund the work needed to make sure that these valuable, high quality instructional materials are adopted and used effectively.<\/p>\n<p>I realize that this rubs some the wrong way, but bear with me.<\/p>\n<p>My reasons for suggesting this are several:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Without some revenue flow, business models are fundamentally unsustainable.<\/li>\n<li>Most school districts do not buy primarily on price (and even where this is an issue, this would still be the clear low price option).<\/li>\n<li>Price can indicate value, and &#8220;free&#8221; can be a negative.<\/li>\n<li>Paying something tends to establish buy-in and commitment.<\/li>\n<li>Without some revenue flow, business models are fundamentally unsustainable.
